How to Do Laughter Meditation

Meditation Master Osho offered a wide range of meditations to practice, some of them seemingly strange. His laughter meditation definitely falls into the category of unusual but I decided to give it a try this morning. I must say after about 2 minutes of trying, I burst into genuine laughter until my stomach hurt. If you are feeling a little down, tired, or uninspired – I hope you give this technique a shot.

Here is how to do laughter meditation as explained by Osho:

  1. Every morning upon waking, before opening your eyes, stretch like a cat. Stretch every fiber of your body.
  2.  After three or four minutes, with eyes still closed, begin to laugh.
  3. For five minutes just laugh. At first you will be forcing it, but soon the sound of your own attempt to laugh will cause genuine laughter. It may take several days before it really happens, for we are so unaccustomed to the phenomenon. But before long it will be spontaneous and will change the nature of your day.

My spontaneous laughter happened after one try – but I’m a silly person so it doesn’t take much for me to burst into giggles.

So go ahead and try this meditation, what better way to start your day than with laughter.
